The Truth Behind the Division of the Muslim Ummah

Understanding the Past to Unite the Present

“Divide and Rule”

This phrase refers to a strategy where a ruling power maintains control by breaking up larger groups into smaller. By keeping them divided, the ruler ensures they never unite against him.

For centuries, our enemies have used the same strategy: Divide and Rule. Keep the Muslims busy fighting each other, and they’ll never fight back against oppression.

King Louis IX of France realised this after his failed Seventh Crusade (1248–1254). He saw that swords wouldn’t break the Muslims—but weakening their عقيدة (belief) would.

So instead of military force, he pushed for:

1. Spreading Christian theology in Muslim lands to create confusion.

2. Influencing Muslim scholars and leaders to challenge Islamic beliefs.

3. Encouraging internal division so we’d fight amongst ourselves.

Sound familiar?

Fast forward to today—look around.

Muslims are divided into nations, sects, ideologies—we fight each other harder than we fight our enemies.
And the craziest part? We don’t even realise we’re playing into their plan.

Why Does This Even Matter to You?

Let’s be real. Most young Muslims today don’t care about history.

They’re too busy drowning in social media, gaming, and entertainment—meanwhile, the very people who create these distractions aren’t even living by them.

Look at Mark Zuckerberg. He’s building AI and the Metaverse, but he spends his real life training, spending time in nature, and raising his kids away from screens.

Doesn’t that make you wonder—why are they pushing this lifestyle onto us but not living it themselves?

They distract us while they stay focused. They keep us entertained while they plan.

And we? We scroll. We argue. We stay busy debating while they stay busy controlling the world.

Wallahi, if this doesn’t wake you up, I don’t know what will.

Finding Brotherhood in a Divided World

When I came to Istanbul/Turkiye, I saw a community from different part of the world, truly looks after each other for the sake of Allah. That’s where I understood the real essence of brotherhood. And that’s when it hit me.

This is what we lost
We were once an Ummah without borders. If a Muslim in one part of the world was in danger, the entire Ummah responded. No passports, no visas—just brotherhood for the sake of Allah.

But now?

While I write this, Trump is making decisions about our lands in the Middle East—expelling our brothers and sisters in Palestine. How is it that a random politician decides the fate of Muslim lands? Lands that belong to the Ummah!?

We fight over petty differences while our enemies take over our resources, lands, and futures.

If this doesn’t move your heart, I don’t know what will.

This is why I keep repeating the message of UNITY—if we are truly together, no one can stand against us.

Allah Already Gave Us the Solution

  • Allah ﷻ told us exactly what to do:
“And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided.” (Surah Aal ‘Imran 3:103)

  • And the Prophet ﷺ warned us:

“The believers, in their mutual love, mercy, and compassion, are like a single body. If one part of it feels pain, the rest of the body responds with sleeplessness and fever.” (Sahih Muslim 2586)

But today? If one part of the Ummah is bleeding, the rest of us… keep scrolling.

When was the last time we felt the pain of our brothers and sisters? When was the last time we did something about it?

Sykes–Picot: The Blueprint for Our Division

One of the greatest wounds in modern Islamic history was the Sykes–Picot Agreement (1916)—a secret deal between Britain and France that divided the Muslim lands of the Ottoman Empire. This agreement created artificial borders, splitting the Ummah into separate countries, each with its own imposed nationalism.

As a result:
“You’re no longer one Ummah. You’re Egyptians, Syrians, Iraqis, Turks, Pakistanis… Forget your brothers. Serve your nation first.”

And we fell for it.

We forgot that Allah already gave us our identity—we are Muslims first.

The effects of Sykes-Picot are still alive today:

Muslim nations divided into weak states, easily controlled.

Artificial borders making us see each other as foreigners instead of family.

Foreign powers controlling our resources, keeping us dependent and powerless

This is exactly what the enemies of Islam wanted—to divide and rule, just as they did in the past.

It Starts With Us!

I know what you’re thinking: “Okay, but what can I do?”

The answer is simple: Start small. Start real. Start now.

Prioritise the Ummah over personal differences – It’s not about race, tribe, or nationality. It’s about Islam.

Support your brothers and sisters – Whether financially, emotionally, or through du’a, do your part.

Educate yourself – Know your history. Understand their tactics. Stop falling into the same traps.

Revive the Sunnah of Brotherhood – Greet each other with As-salamu alaykum, look out for one another, and strengthen real-life connections.

Unity isn’t just a beautiful concept—it’s our lifeline.

And if we don’t wake up now, we’ll continue living as divided strangers instead of one powerful Ummah.

May Allah unite our hearts, open our eyes, and make us among those who revive the brotherhood of Islam.

In Allah’s care and protection.

Hamza HFD.
